Firstly I must admit this is not a working diy camera, but a replica made for a UK collector. The engraving shows a camera designed by the Benoist brothers in France in about 1880. They wished to make a panoramic camera , but alas, they , at this time did not have the luxury of roll film and so they devised a mechanuism to pull a sensitised flat glass plate past an exposure slot.  The replica could have worked had I had a glass plate to test the machine , although I suspect that lightleaks would have been a problem.
